Self Portrait Proposition 2
For my self portrait that can not include myself, I am having some difficulty deciding what exactly to do. I am thinking of possibly doing a "self portrait" with one of my favorite stuffed animals, dressing it up for a photo shoot. This portrait, too, would be with borrowed lighting equipment.
Self Portrait Proposition 1
If I had not come to the College of Wooster, I would instead went to Kent State University for fashion design. I have a great love for all things fashion & sewing, in particular costume design. For my self portrait I would like to use some of the art department's lighting to arrange a photo shoot that combines my love of fashion & art. Inspired by the whimsical photographs by Tim Walker, I hope to convey my interests and personality in a carefully arranged photo shoot. I will pull the outfits I will be wearing from my own wardrobe and a friend of mine will assist me with makeup.
Practices of Looking
Thoughts on the Reading
I found the reading to be very interesting. In this chapter, the author discussed power and importance that images hold in our lives. They can depict a variety of cultures, beliefs, ideologies, etc. Viewers draw forth their own ideas about these images. The simple act of looking (or choosing not to) gives the viewer the power to create these meaning, whether or not the artist intended them to. The author brings in various examples to discuss these ideas such as the OJ Simpson mugshot, which I found to be the most interesting.
Work in progress - Welcome to Night Vale
1st image made completely in Photoshop - it's been a long and difficult work in progress trying to figure out how to use it on my own...so although it's not done, I thought I'd share my work in progress of Cecil Baldwin from Welcome to Night Vale.
Project #1 Old Work/ New Ideas
Old Work
New Ideas
This is an illustration titled "Sipi Sipi" by the Malaysian artist kidchan. I would like to bring some of the elegance she brings into her works into mine as well. Her use of colors and line are enchanting as well as the different textures she brings to each of her pieces. All of her works are done in Photoshop which is just astonishing to me. I am trying to learn how to draw digitally, so I look up to her as an artist.
The Photograph as Contemporary Art by Charlotte Cotton
A short summary of the introduction
The introduction of Charlotte Cotton's book, The Photograph as Contemporary Art, describes the current state of the world of photography. Jumping straight into contemporary photography, the author assumes that those picking up the book already have preexisting knowledge of early photography. She also outlines that the book will be divided into eight chapters, highlighting the eight genres of photography. Cotton clarifies that while there are eight genres that she will be discussing, photography itself often does not fit into just one category, but many. She goes on to discuss various topics of photography, using a couple of contemporary photographers as an example.
