I love the composition of this image, the use of color in negative space is particularity strong and the severe contrast from black to violet to grey works very well. I'm not familiar with the work you stated this image was inspired by but there are some details in this image that give me clues such as the hint of a green tie and the section of grey hairs. i think including those small details definitely help tell a story.
